Biology is one of the branches of the discipline of Science focusing on life and living organisms. As a standalone subject from Upper Secondary onwards, Biology forms an important part of the Singapore Educational system.

At the O Levels, students have the option to either further their education in Pure or Elective Biology – differing in the depth of content taught. This bases off their foundation from the lower Secondary curriculum.

After which, the A-Level curriculum in Junior College (JC) comprises of the H1, H2 and H3 Syllabus.

Similarly, Biology is also offered with the IB Program. The subject is offered as a Standard Level (SL), Higher Level (HL) subject, or as a portion in the Coordinated Sciences syllabus.

Exam Format

The O Level and A Level syllabus focus primarily on structures and free response questions. Known as Paper 2 in the O Levels, this comprises 50% of the final grades. Known as Papers 2 and 3 in the A Levels, this makes up 65% of the final grade in the A Levels.

With a focus on structured response and data-based questions, students need to allocate sufficient time to the different parts in these papers during the exam and in preparations leading up to the exam. A successful time allocation strategy will result in the highest payoff in terms of marks gain during the exam!

Practical Assessment

The practical assessment seeks to train and test student’s ability to execute a planned Biology experiment.

This is similar at the A Levels. Students need to be able to plan out, observe, manipulate and analyse data given. Practicing with available papers allows students to gain insights into planning different types of experiments and explore various question types.
