Physics makes up one of the 3 branches of Science as a discipline. Focusing on Matter, Physics has a focus on math and forms an important part of Singapore’s educational system. Especially given our

Syllabus Content

Tested at the O Levels, A Levels as well as the IB Syllabus, Physics is a familiar subject to most students.

Basic concepts in Physics topics, such as electricity and energy at the lower secondary levels. As they move up to upper Secondary, students get to choose whether to do Pure or Elective Physics – differing in the range of topics taught and the overall difficulty.

At the A Levels, H1, H2 and H3 Physics are offered to students. Physics at this level is significantly harder and more in-
depth. H3 Physics also offers different aspects of Physics, such as Atomic Physics, for further learning.

Similarly, for the IB Program, Physics differs in difficulty, offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

Exam Format

Observing the Physics Syllabus at both O Level and A Levels, the structured and free-response portion of the exam takes up the highest weightage of all. At the O Levels, it comprises 50% of the final grade. At the A Levels, it comprises 65% of the final grade. Given its heavy weightage, it is, therefore, necessary for students to score well first in this paper. To do so, students need to be able to identify keywords in the marking scheme in order to obtain more marks overall. On top of that, time management is also important during the exam, in all the papers. Being able to correctly allocate time to different sections helps students to score in different portions instead of delving on a difficult question with little payoff.

The last component in both the O Level and A Level syllabus consists of the practical assessment component. It comprises of practical lab tests where the students are required to execute an entire planned experiment under timed conditions. While depending on the experiment given, the portion of this component on analysing data can be well prepared for in advance. At the A Levels, students are no longer required to execute a whole experiment and are only required to plan out the experiment under timed conditions.
